1923-2002
Jean Paul Riopelle was born in Montreal, Canada in 1923, and studied to the Ecole des Beaux-arts in Montreal in 1943. Like many North American artists, Riopelle went to Paris following World War II to study, but took up permanent residence there.
A contributor to European Abstract Expressionism, Riopelle's characteristic abstractions are gestural, with thick paint applied with a palette knife.
